The historic Salunga Trolley Station, long recognized as a community connection hub, has been repurposed as a vibrant coffee shop that pays homage to its history.

Several years ago, a father and son started roasting coffee as a hobby. Rooted deeply in Salunga, their aspirations evolved into a vision: to establish a space where friends and neighbors could forge meaningful connections over coffee.

The historic trolley station presented a unique opportunity to manifest this vision. Already imbued with the spirit of connectivity, it provided a platform to integrate this essence into their brand. This transformation culminated in the rebranding of what had formerly been known as Fat Cow Coffee Roasters into Trolley Line Coffee.

A Story of Placemaking & Identity

Building as Brand

The design seamlessly merges the building’s historical significance with its new identity as a coffee shop.

The layered history is articulated through authentic use of original materials and narrative, complemented by harmonious modern elements.  The interior signage highlights this iconic symbol of the rail transportation that connected towns across south central Pennsylvania from the 1890’s through the 1940’s.

Restoring & Repurposing

Architectural Features

The new coffee shop embodies a contemporary reinterpretation of the historical style.

The original large wooden doors were removed to install a new monumental entry door. The wood from the doors was repurposed as the accent material for the transaction counter. Additional wood that was salvaged from the selective interior demolition was used for the menu board.
